Rie Aruga's Sheltering Eaves Manga Ends With 8th Volume

Rie Aruga's acclaimed josei manga Sheltering Eaves is coming to an end with its eighth volume, bringing the emotional story of Yoru and Tenjaku to a close.

The manga, known in Japan as Koboreru Yoru ni, has earned attention for its realistic portrayal of young people dealing with abuse, abandonment, foster care, trauma, and complicated relationships. Aruga is also the creator of the popular manga Perfect World.

Sheltering Eaves Reaches Its Final Volume

Written and illustrated by Rie Aruga, Sheltering Eaves began serialization in Kodansha's Kiss magazine in September 2022.

The story follows Yoru, a girl who was placed in a children's home after suffering abuse from her mother. There, she meets Tenjaku, a boy who becomes an important source of support in her life.

As teenagers, the two discover that they have only a limited amount of time before they are legally required to leave the children's home. Their relationship gradually develops as they confront painful memories, complicated emotions, and the uncertainty of life outside the facility.

The manga combines romance with a grounded exploration of the difficulties faced by vulnerable young people.

A Story About Healing and Growing Up

At the center of Sheltering Eaves are Yoru and Tenjaku's attempts to build a future while carrying the emotional scars of their childhoods.

Rather than presenting their relationship as a simple romance, Aruga explores how past experiences can affect the way people form attachments and understand love.

The story also examines the limitations of systems designed to protect vulnerable children. As Yoru and Tenjaku grow older, they are forced to think about what happens when the support they have relied upon is no longer available.

Kodansha describes the series as a josei romance that combines a realistic depiction of Japan's foster-care system with an emotional love story.

Rie Aruga's Follow-Up to Perfect World

Sheltering Eaves is Aruga's follow-up to her well-known manga Perfect World, another series praised for tackling difficult real-life subjects through a romantic drama.

The new series has similarly attracted attention for its emotionally complex characters and realistic approach to challenging themes.

Sheltering Eaves was also selected for the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings, further highlighting its recognition among manga readers and industry representatives.

English Release From Kodansha

For international readers, Kodansha Comics is publishing Sheltering Eaves in English.

The first English volume was released digitally and in print in November 2024. Kodansha's English edition currently lists four available volumes, with Volume 4 released in August 2025.

The English editions give readers outside Japan an opportunity to follow Yoru and Tenjaku's difficult journey as the series approaches its conclusion.

The Final Chapter of Yoru and Tenjaku's Journey

With the story concluding in its eighth collected volume, fans will soon be able to experience the complete journey of Yoru and Tenjaku from their childhood in the children's home through the challenges of adulthood.

The conclusion marks the end of another significant manga from Rie Aruga, whose works have consistently focused on relationships while addressing serious social and personal issues.

For readers who have followed Sheltering Eaves since its debut, the eighth volume will provide the final chapter in Yoru and Tenjaku's emotional journey.
