Netflix has confirmed that it will begin streaming Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames (Shin-Gekijōban Gintama: Yoshiwara Daienjō) starting August 27, bringing the newest entry in the long-running franchise to a global audience roughly six months after its Japanese theatrical debut.
About the Film
Yoshiwara in Flames is a compilation film that fully reanimates the beloved "Yoshiwara in Flames" arc, originally covered in episodes 139 through 146 of the Gintama TV anime. The film isn't just a retread, though — it features newly animated scenes and introduces characters who never appeared in the original arc, including an anime-original character named Enkaku, Hōsen's close aide, voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi.
Netflix Anime's official synopsis captures the emotional core of the story: to reunite a young boy with his mother, Gintoki and his friends must confront the darkness lurking within Yoshiwara, the massive underground red-light district ruled by the ruthless Yato clansman Hōsen, the self-proclaimed "Night King."
The film released in Japanese theaters on February 13, complete with IMAX screenings, as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations for both the Gintama manga and anime. It performed well at the box office, opening in the #2 spot and selling 262,700 tickets for roughly $2.64 million in its first three days.

About Gintama
Gintama, created by Hideaki Sorachi, began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2003 and concluded its 77th and final volume in 2019. Set in an alternate, anachronistic Edo-era Japan invaded by aliens, the series blends slapstick comedy with surprisingly heartfelt drama. The original TV anime ran from 2006 to 2018 across four seasons and has spawned numerous films, including Gintama THE FINAL (2021) and the Gintama on Theater 2D compilation movies.
Gintama the Movie 2026: Yoshiwara in Flames will also be released on Blu-ray in Japan on August 26, one day ahead of its Netflix debut.
